Wonder Boys, Weevils Split Twin Bill

Game One: Tech 12, UAM 0 Arkansas Tech’s Cole Fergus set the tone with a first-inning grand slam and the Wonder Boys defeated UA-Monticello 12-0 in Saturday’s first game. Caleb McKinnon was 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and two runs scored for Arkansas Tech. Patrick Castleberry and Collin O’Neil added two RBIs apiece. Trent Armstrong (3-1) pitched a shutout for the Wonder Boys. He limited the Boll Weevils to five hits and recorded five strikeouts. The game was stopped after the seventh inning due to the mercy rule. UAM starting pitcher Gavin Johnson (1-3) allowed five runs on four hits in two innings. Game Two: UAM 8, Tech 1 Seven walks issued by Arkansas Tech pitchers helped UA-Monticello take the rubber match of the three-game series 8-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Boll Weevils took advantage of three walks and a hit batsman — all after two were out — to score four runs in the bottom of the third inning. UAM extended its lead to 8-0 on a grand slam by Corey Wood in the bottom of the fourth. Arkansas Tech scored its lone run on an RBI single by Fergus in the top of the sixth inning. Austin Braddock (6-1) pitched a complete game for the Boll Weevils. He allowed one run on five hits over seven innings. Tech starting pitcher Aaron Johnson (1-2) took the loss. He was charged with four runs on one hit in two and two-thirds innings.]]>
