Boll Weevils Rally, Top Wonder Boys 38-31

The University of Arkansas at Monticello scored 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and defeat Arkansas Tech 38-31 in the Great American Conference and season opener at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium in Monticello on Saturday night.

The Wonder Boys led 31-10 at the end of three quarters, but UAM freshman quarterback Hunter Leppert threw three touchdown passes in the final 15 minutes to spark the Boll Weevils’ comeback.

The final of those scoring strikes and the game winner came with 35 seconds left on an 17-yard touchdown pass from Leppert to D.J. Stephens.

Leppert completed 29-of-47 passes for 345 yards and four touchdowns. Stephens made nine catches for 119 yards.

Arkansas Tech freshman quarterback Preston Conder completed 23-of-35 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns. A.J. Whitmore made 11 catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns in his Tech debut, while Trayshun King carried 20 times for 76 yards and a touchdown in his first outing as a Wonder Boy.

The loss snapped Arkansas Tech’s seven-game winning streak in season openers and five-game winning streak over UAM.

The Wonder Boys will return to action with a non-conference game at Southwest Baptist on Saturday, Sept. 10. Kickoff in Bolivar, Mo., is set for 6 p.m.
