Marshall's Gem Stunts Wonder Boys

Arkansas-Monticello starting pitcher Kenny Marshall held Arkansas Tech to two base hits and the Boll Weevils defeated the Wonder Boys 3-2 in Great American Conference baseball at Tech Field in Russellville on Friday night.

UAM took the lead for good on a solo home run by Justin Hollis in the top of the seventh inning. His first homer of the season gave the Boll Weevils a 2-1 lead.

Arkansas-Monticello added an insurance run in the top of the eighth when Christian Gallegos came home on an error.

That run proved to be valuable when Arkansas Tech pulled within 3-2 on Nate Wilder’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

That was all that Marshall would allow on his way to his second complete game of the season. He retired the Wonder Boys in order in the bottom of the ninth to improve his 2012 record to 5-2.

Marshall allowed two runs on two hits in nine innings. He struck out nine and walked eight.

Aaron Luchterhand (3-5) took the loss for Arkansas Tech. He surrendered two runs on three hits in seven innings. Luchterhand recorded seven strikeouts.

Tech’s Landon Sullins extended his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games with an RBI triple in the bottom of the first. Michael Rezin scored on the play and the Wonder Boys led 1-0.

The Boll Weevils pulled even on J.D. Deloach’s RBI single in the top of the second inning and took the lead for good on Hollis’ blast over the left-field fence in the seventh.

UAM (15-19 overall, 5-12 GAC) stopped a five-game losing streak with the win. Arkansas Tech (16-21, 5-8) suffered its third consecutive loss.
