Break Out the Brooms: Tech Sweeps Series

Arkansas Tech completed a three-game sweep of Ouachita Baptist in its first Gulf South Conference baseball series of the season by defeating the Tigers 9-2 at Rab Rodgers Field in Arkadelphia on Sunday afternoon.

The Wonder Boys (15-10 overall, 3-0 GSC) set the tone early on Sunday when Matt Johnson led off the game with a home run to left field.

Madison Beaird followed with a double, Nick Makris put down a bunt single and Landon Sullins delivered an RBI single to give Arkansas Tech a 2-0 lead before the first out was recorded.

The Wonder Boys were just getting started in the top of the first. Chris Riley notched a two-run triple to right, and he later came around to score to make it 5-0 after a half-inning.

An RBI double by Johnson, a two-run single from Beaird and an RBI double by Sullins in the top of the third inning staked Arkansas Tech to a 9-0 lead.

That was more than enough run support for starting pitcher Mason Reynolds (1-1), who worked five and two-third innings to earn his first win as a Wonder Boy.

Reynolds allowed one run on six hits before giving way to Nick Wilson, who allowed one run over two and one-third innings. John Michael Moore came out of the Arkansas Tech bullpen to record the final three outs.

Ouachita Baptist starting pitcher Davis Ward (0-2) was tagged for five runs, four earned, on five hits in two-thirds of an inning.

The Tigers fell to 9-14 overall and 0-3 in league play with the loss.

The Wonder Boys will return home to host Central Oklahoma for a non-conference doubleheader at Tech Field in Russellville on Tuesday, March 22.

First pitch at Tech Field is scheduled for 4 p.m. No admission will be charged.
