Three Arkansas Tech pitchers combined to hold West Florida to two base hits and the Wonder Boys defeated the nationally seventh-ranked Argonauts 4-2 at Jim Spooner Field in Pensacola, Fla., on Sunday.
Arkansas Tech scored two runs in the top of the first inning and never surrendered the lead as the Wonder Boys posted a win over the defending NCAA Division II national champions.
Zak Anstine (3-0) was the winning pitcher. He allowed two runs on two hits over seven innings. Anstine struck out eight and walked four.
Brandon Arata pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Jonathan Finnegan worked a spotless ninth inning to secure the win for Arkansas Tech. Finnegan earned his second save of the season.
Landon Sullins went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in for the Wonder Boys. Nate Wilder drove in a run, while Madison Beaird notched two hits and two runs scored.
The win allowed Arkansas Tech (12-14) to avoid a series sweep. West Florida (20-7) defeated the Wonder Boys 6-1 and 7-2 in a doubleheader on Saturday.
Arkansas Tech will host Southeastern Oklahoma State for a three-game Great American Conference series at Tech Field in Russellville on March 23-24.
The Wonder Boys and the Savage Storm will play a single game beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. That contest can be heard on KWKK 100.9 FM and athletics.atu.edu.
The two sides will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. Those games will be broadcast over KCAB 980 AM and athletics.atu.edu.
