Wonder Boys Take First Place in GAC Baseball

Game One: Arkansas Tech 4, SWOSU 3 Kris Ayers’ RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning provided Arkansas Tech with what proved to be the winning run in a 4-3 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State in the series opener on Saturday. The two-out, two-base hit drove in Patrick Castleberry with the go-ahead run. Arkansas Tech closer Randy Vallejo pitched around a two-out single by SWOSU’s Chris Faulkner in the top of the ninth inning to preserve a one-run Wonder Boys’ victory. It was Vallejo’s seventh save of the season. Tech reliever Jake Bell (4-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn the victory. Ryan Taylor started on the mound for the Wonder Boys and received no decision after allowing three runs on two hits over five and two-thirds innings. Game Two: Arkansas Tech 6, SWOSU 4 Ayers did it again in game two. His two-run home run to right center field in the bottom of the fifth inning made the difference in a 6-4 Arkansas Tech victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State. Bell emerged from the bullpen to pitch a scoreless sixth inning for the Wonder Boys. Vallejo took the ball for the seventh and final inning and earned his eighth save of the season by fending off a Southwestern Oklahoma State comeback bid. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out before Vallejo induced a line out and a foul pop out to end the game. Arkansas Tech reliever Colt Burns (1-0) was the winning pitcher. Starter Mason Reynolds received no decision after allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits over four and two-thirds innings.]]>
