Wonder Boys Sweep Aggies at Tech Field

Arkansas Tech, the top hitting team in the Gulf South Conference, slugged its way to two more wins at Tech Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Wonder Boys (19-8), who lead the GSC with a team batting average of .360, defeated the Cameron University Aggies 10-3 and 9-8 in Tuesday’s non-conference doubleheader.

Tech already led 3-2 before it exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in game one. The big blow in the frame was a two-out, two-run home run by Landon Sullins.

Chad Wynn went 3-for-3 with three runs scored for the Wonder Boys. Sullins drove in three runs, while Matt Johnson, Nick Makris and Clint Stroud had two RBIs each.

Blaine Sims (2-2) allowed three runs on five hits in six innings and was credited with the victory in game one.

Cameron (14-8) looked to have a split in the bag when it took an 8-3 lead to the bottom half of the seventh and final inning in game two.

But Makris led off the last of the seventh with a home run. Stroud doubled ahead of a two-run homer by Madison Beaird, and all of a sudden Cameron’s lead was down to 8-6.

Singles by Anthony Gower and Chris Reese put runners at first and second with still no one out. Josh Riley was then hit by a pitch to put the potential winning run on base.

Landon Sullins drove Gower home with an RBI single to make it 8-7, and Johnson capped Tech’s improbable comeback by delivering a two-run double that plated Riley with the tying run and Sullins with the winning run.

Tech’s Josh Floriani (6-0) got the final out in the top of the seventh by striking out the only batter he faced and he was credited with the win.

The Wonder Boys will visit Arkansas-Monticello for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
