Wonder Boys Slip to No. 2 in Country

Half of the voters on the National Association of Basketball Coaches NCAA Division II top 25 poll still believe that Arkansas Tech is the best D-II men’s basketball team in the country, but that wasn’t enough for the Wonder Boys to maintain the top spot in the rankings.

The Wonder Boys (26-1) saw their six-week run at No. 1 come to an end of Tuesday when Augusta State (25-2) replaced Arkansas Tech at the top of the poll.

Tech is ranked No. 2 entering the postseason.

Both Tech and Augusta State received four first-place votes in this week’s balloting, but the Jaguars earned a total of 192 points in the voting as compared to 187 points for the Wonder Boys.

Arkansas Tech suffered its first loss of the season last Thursday when Arkansas-Monticello defeated the Wonder Boys 59-51.

Tech bounced back to defeat Christian Brothers 68-54 in the regular season finale on Saturday.

The Wonder Boys will face West Georgia (13-14) in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament at 2:45 p.m. Friday.

Russellville radio station KWKK 100.9 FM and www.athletics.atu.edu will have live play-by-play coverage from the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss.
