Wonder Boys Picked to Win GAC Golf Crown

Great American Conference men’s golf coaches see the 2019 league championship coming down to three teams.

Arkansas Tech University received four first-place votes and a total of 76 points to emerge as a narrow favorite to win the 2019 GAC men’s golf title. Right behind the Wonder Boys in the preseason poll were Southeastern Oklahoma State University (2nd, 73 points) and five-time defending champion Henderson State University (3rd, 65 points).

The Savage Storm and the Reddies both earned three first-place votes.

Completing the poll were Harding University (T-4th, 55 points), Southwestern Oklahoma State University (T-4th, 55 points), Oklahoma Baptist University (6th, 35 points), Southern Arkansas University (7th, 31 points), Southern Nazarene University (8th, 25 points), Northwestern Oklahoma State University (9th, 19 points) and the University of Arkansas-Monticello (10th, 16 points).

ATU reached the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Championships in 2017 and 2018. The Wonder Boys have finished in the top three at the GAC Championships in each of the seven years since the league was formed, including win the conference title in 2013. Tech has finished as GAC runner-up each of the last three years.

Head coach Luke Calcatera and the Wonder Boys will open their 2018-19 season by competing in the Glade Springs Intercollegiate at Daniels, W.Va., Sept. 3-4.
