Wonder Boys Outlast SWOSU in 11 Innings

Arkansas Tech took advantage of a series of Southwestern Oklahoma State miscues in the top of the 11th inning on Friday night to come away with an 8-4 victory in the opening round of the inaugural Great American Conference Baseball Tournament at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid, Okla.

Arkansas Tech (26-25) will face Southeastern Oklahoma State (33-15) in a winners’ bracket game at 7 p.m. Saturday. The game can be heard over KWKK 100.9 FM or by clicking here.

The Bulldogs issued three walks and committed two errors in the top of the 11th to help the Wonder Boys plate four runs.

A throwing error by SWOSU shortstop Kevin Cantrell allowed Cesar Abreu to come in with the go-ahead run, and Madison Beaird followed him home to make it 6-4.

An infield RBI single by Nate Wilder and a sacrifice fly by Michael Rezin provided Arkansas Tech with further insurance.

Stephen Thompson (3-2) pitched a scoreless bottom of the 11th inning to secure the victory. Thompson, who came on in relief of starter Aaron Luchterhand at the beginning of the eighth inning, retired 12 of the last 13 men he faced.

SWOSU reliever David Francis (2-5) took the loss.

Wilder and Thomas Biocic were both 3-for-6 with two runs batted in for Arkansas Tech.

Adam Gendell went 3-for-4 and Tyler Wells hit a solo home run for the Bulldogs.
