Wonder Boys Look to Surprise the GAC Again

After a pair of wins over Northwestern Oklahoma State University on April 23, the Arkansas Tech University baseball program Twitter account asked a simple question: why not us?

The eighth-seeded Wonder Boys (23-29) will hope to continue their late-season surge when they visit Arkadelphia for the final stage of the 2016 Great American Conference Tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 12, with a 1 p.m. game between Arkansas Tech and fourth-seeded Henderson State University (29-23).

Arkansas Tech was on the outside looking in on the eight-team field for the GAC postseason before that doubleheader sweep at Northwestern Oklahoma State on April 23.

A victory at Harding University eight days later clinched the Wonder Boys’ seventh consecutive postseason berth. Their reward as the No. 8 seed in the GAC Tournament was a trip to Weatherford, Okla., for a best-of-three games series against GAC regular season champion Southwestern Oklahoma State University on May 6-7.

Arkansas Tech only needed two games to eliminate the Bulldogs and move on to Clyde Berry Field this weekend for the four-team, double-elimination stage to determine the GAC Tournament champion.

The other first-round game on Thursday will pit No. 2 seed University of Arkansas-Monticello against No. 3 seed Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Action at the GAC Tournament is scheduled to continue through Saturday, May 14. The champion will receive an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Division II Tournament.

Henderson State was 3-1 against Arkansas Tech during the regular season. The Reddies defeated the Wonder Boys 6-5, 6-3 and 4-3 during a GAC series in Arkadelphia Feb. 26-27.

Arkansas Tech won the most recent meeting between the two teams 4-3 in a non-conference contest at Russellville on March 15.
