Wonder Boys Finish 8th at GSC Tournament

Arkansas Tech closed out its Gulf South Conference era in men’s golf by finishing eighth among 12 teams in the 2011 GSC Championships at Hot Springs Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.

The Wonder Boys were steady with team scores of 309, 304 and 308 during the three rounds of the 54-hole event.

Arkansas Tech’s cumulative total of 921 put it in a tightly-packed middle of the field. Only 12 strokes separated fifth from eighth place.

West Florida (295-287-295-877) won its 10th GSC Tournament title in men’s golf by finishing three strokes in front of runner-up North Alabama (295-292-293-880).

The individual GSC championship went to West Florida’s Carlos Rodriguez. He returned scores of 73-70-72 for a 1-under par total of 215 and a one-stroke victory.

Arkansas Tech was represented by Parker Hale (T-24th, 77-74-78-229), Jack Garrett (T-27th, 78-75-77-230), Graham Rucker (T-27th, 77-77-76-230), Slade Hames (T-35th, 77-79-78-234) and Kyle Barton (T-38th, 80-78-77-235).

The Wonder Boys leave the GSC as the only program from Arkansas to ever win the Gulf South Conference men’s golf championship. Head coach Dave Falconer guided Arkansas Tech to that title in 2004.

Arkansas Tech will move forward to the new NCAA Division II Great American Conference beginning in fall 2011.
