Wonder Boys Close Book on Preseason Camp

Two weeks of preseason camp culminated with a 17-7 Green team victory in the fall Arkansas Tech Green and Gold scrimmage at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field on Tuesday night.

Wonder Boys starting quarterback Tanner Marsh completed 8-of-11 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown to lead the Green team to victory.

It was the second and final major preseason scrimmage for Arkansas Tech, which opens its 2012 season by hosting Bacone College at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1.

“I think everything has gone well,” said Wonder Boys head coach Steve Mullins when asked about his team’s preseason camp. “The negative has been the nagging injuries that we have. We’ve got to get some people that we are counting on back on the field. The positives are I really like the attitude of the team and I think we are a lot further along than we were this time last year…particularly with our mental errors. I think we are a smarter team than we were last year, so that’s very pleasing.”

Mullins expressed disappointment in Arkansas Tech’s defense following the first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday, but he said that unit made strides from scrimmage No. 1 to scrimmage No. 2.

“I think that we showed some improvement on defense,” said Mullins. “We were able to create some turnovers. We didn’t necessarily recover every fumble, but we did create some. That was a positive.”

Other offensive leaders for the Green team included Casey Henderson, who rushed seven times for 37 yards and a touchdown, and Cassius Washington, who caught four passes for 56 yards.
