Wonder Boys Release 2011 Football Schedule

Five Great American Conference games and five non-conference games will make up the 2011 Arkansas Tech University football schedule, which was announced by the Tech Athletics Department on Monday.

The Wonder Boys will begin a new era on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they face the University of Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium in Monticello.

It will be the first Great American Conference football game for both institutions. Arkansas Tech and UAM are among nine charter members of the new NCAA Division II league, which will debut in fall 2011.

Arkansas Tech will take a five-week break from conference play with a trip to Missouri for a contest against Southwest Baptist (Sept. 10), home games against Delta State (Sept. 17) and West Alabama (Sept. 24), another visit to the Show-Me State to face Central Missouri (Oct. 1) and a home date with North Alabama (Oct. 8).

The Wonder Boys will continue their pursuit of the inaugural GAC football title with an Oct. 15 league game against Southern Arkansas in Magnolia.

Tech’s 2011 schedule will conclude with three conference games against teams from Oklahoma. The Wonder Boys will host Southeastern Oklahoma State for Homecoming on Oct. 22 and East Central University on Oct. 29 before heading to Southwestern Oklahoma State for the regular season finale in Weatherford on Nov. 5.

Arkansas Tech is playing Gulf South Conference members Delta State, West Alabama and North Alabama this year as part of the exit agreement for the six Arkansas institutions that left the GSC after the 2010-11 academic year.

The Wonder Boys will play their first full Great American Conference football schedule in 2012.

Steve Mullins (photographed), who is 89-61 as Arkansas Tech head football coach, will return for his 15th season with the Wonder Boys in 2011. Mullins has won more games as Tech head football coach than any other person.

Arkansas Tech was 4-7 overall during the 2010 season. The Wonder Boys have reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs three times (1999, 2004 and 2009) under Mullins’ guidance.
