Wonder Boys: Alone at the Top

Arkansas Tech University, the only undefeated team at any level of NCAA men’s basketball, extended its streak of consecutive weeks at No. 1 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches NCAA Division II poll to six when this week’s rankings were announced on Tuesday.

The Wonder Boys (25-0 overall, 12-0 Gulf South Conference West Division) maintained their No. 1 national ranking with a pair of 10-point wins last week.

Tech beat Ouachita Baptist 76-66 on Thursday. The Wonder Boys clinched their first-ever GSC West Division men’s basketball title with a 76-66 win at Delta State on Saturday.

There are a total of 1,023 men’s basketball teams competing in the NCAA this season — 346 at the NCAA Division I level, 272 at the NCAA Division II level and 405 at the NCAA Division III level.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Arkansas Tech is the only team among those 1,023 squads to win every game this season.

The Wonder Boys’ 25-0 start is their best ever. The previous best start by a Tech men’s basketball team was 24-0 in 1952-53.

The Wonder Boys will visit Arkansas-Monticello at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and host Christian Brothers at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The ticket office and doors to Tucker Coliseum will open at 3 p.m. Saturday. Those with a valid Tech identification card will be admitted free.

Russellville radio station KWKK 100.9 FM and www.athletics.atu.edu will have live play-by-play coverage of both games.
