Wind & Ivory to Open Tech Concert Season

Wind & Ivory, a trumpet and piano duo with international experience and Arkansas ties, will begin the 2010-11 concert season at Arkansas Tech University with a performance on Thursday, Sept. 9. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Auditorium. Admission will be free and open to the public. Wind & Ivory features Edgar E. Johnson III on trumpet and Katrinka Blystone Johnson on piano. The married couple has performed together under the name Wind & Ivory since 1986.

In just their second year as a combo, the Johnsons were invited to participate in the Maurice Andre trumpet competition in Paris, France. Today, they live in Houston, Texas, and work as freelance performers and teachers.

On their Facebook page, the Johnsons describe their style as a “dynamic trumpet and piano duo that appeals to all ages through their passion for music and ability to relate it to others.”

Edgar E. Johnson III once studied under Hal Cooper, director of bands at Arkansas Tech, as part of a youth orchestra. Johnson’s first solo performance — “A Trumpeter’s Lullaby” by Leroy Anderson — came under Cooper’s direction.

Johnson and Dr. Gary Barrow, professor of music at Arkansas Tech, were fellow members of the trumpet section in the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra when Johnson was in graduate school at the University of Arkansas.
