Arkansas Tech wide receiver A.J. Whitmore was named Great American Conference special teams player of the week by the league office on Monday, Sept. 19.
Whitmore, a senior from Nashville, earned the GAC weekly award by amassing 277 all-purpose yards during the Wonder Boys’ 47-32 loss to nationally 10th-ranked Delta State on Saturday, Sept. 17.
Included in Whitmore’s big night was a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 6:54 left in the first quarter. It tied the 10th-longest kickoff return in Arkansas Tech history and was the first kickoff return for a touchdown by a Wonder Boy since 2009.
Whitmore returned four kickoffs for a total of 172 yards and caught eight passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns against Delta State.
For the season, Whitmore leads the GAC in all-purpose yardage (177.0 yards per game).
Arkansas Tech will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when it hosts West Alabama for a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field in Russellville.
