Von Lienen, Farney Garner Preseason Awards

Arkansas Tech volleyball players Sarah Von Lienen and Laura Farney were named to the 2010 preseason All-Gulf South Conference West Division team on Wednesday.

Both Von Lienen and Farney were first team All-GSC West selections at the end of the 2009 volleyball season. Von Lienen went on to earn All-NCAA Division II South Region honors for a second straight year and a spot on the GSC Academic Honor Roll, while Farney was named to the 2009 GSC All-Academic team.

Von Lienen (photographed, top right) added an additional honor this summer when she was voted to the GSC All-Decade team.

A 6-foot-2 senior middle blocker from Lakeland, Tenn., Von Lienen recorded 409 kills and 107 blocks for the 2009 Golden Suns.

Von Lienen ranked second in the GSC in hitting percentage (.324) and fifth in the conference in blocks (0.90 per game) last season.

Farney (photographed, bottom right) ranked sixth in the GSC in kills per game (3.33) and ninth in the GSC in service aces per game (0.35) for the 2009 Golden Suns. She totaled 400 kills and 334 digs a year ago.

Tech finished the 2009 volleyball season 24-13 overall. The Suns were third in the GSC West Division and qualified for the GSC Tournament for a third consecutive year.

Tech will begin its 2010 volleyball season Sept. 3-4 at the 2010 Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites Classic in Denton, Texas.
