Students enrolled in the Upward Bound program at Arkansas Tech University will learn more about driving safety this Saturday.

Drew Latch with the Russellville Police Department will be on the Russellville campus meeting with the students.

During his presentation, students will learn about the importance of not texting while driving and the dangers of drinking and driving.

Following Latch’s presentation, students in the program will be able to take part in a simulated exercise of driving a golf cart through an obstacle course to mimic the effects of driving while intoxicate.

Jill Hendricks, director of Upward Bound, says the program is one of several planned throughout the year.

Students taking part in the program have access to after-school tutoring and various cultural programs throughout the year.  Additionally, each summer the students take part in a summer academy where they take classes to prepare for the upcoming year.

Upward Bound participants must meet income guidelines as set by the federal government and/or be a potential first-generation college student.
