UAM Tops Tech 12-10 in Non-League Game

Arkansas-Monticello used a seven-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys 12-10 in a non-conference baseball game at Weevil Field in Monticello on Friday.

Arkansas Tech (19-9) led 8-5 and it retired the first two Boll Weevils in the bottom of the seventh.

The next eight UAM men to come to the plate all reached base, including three that were hit by a pitch.

Matt Lewis drove in the go-ahead run for the Boll Weevils (17-10) on a single to center field, and Kyle Henry followed with a triple to right that drove in two insurance runs.

Wayne Hawkins capped the UAM outburst and gave the Weevils a 12-8 lead with a single to left-center field.

The Wonder Boys got the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth thanks to a Matt Johnson RBI single and a fielding error that allowed Tech to pull to within 12-10.

But Brett Stewart emerged from the UAM bullpen to get a game-ending strike out and earn his third save of the season.

Joe Lamoureux (1-1) pitched three innings of relief for the Boll Weevils and was the winning pitcher. Tech’s Tyler Shaw (0-1) took the loss on the mound.

Chad Wynn was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Wonder Boys. Johnson was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Arkansas Tech and UAM will begin a three-game Gulf South Conference series with a doubleheader at noon Saturday at Weevil Field in Monticello.
