Natalia Santos, Jenny Vining and Jessica Weatherford represent Arkansas Tech University on the 2010-11 All-Gulf South Conference West Division women’s basketball honor squad.
The all-conference women’s basketball team was announced by the GSC office on Monday, Feb. 28. The teams were selected by votes from league head coaches.
Santos (photographed, top), a 6-foot-2 junior forward from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was named first team all-conference. It is her second consecutive All-GSC nod.
Vining (photographed, bottom left), a 5-foot-9 senior guard from Marshall, and Weatherford (photographed, bottom right), a 6-foot sophomore forward from Bonnerdale, were both selected to the All-GSC West Division second team.
It is the second straight all-conference award for Vining and the first such honor for Weatherford, who was named GSC West Division freshman of the year in 2009-10.
Santos is averaging 17.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. She ranks fourth in the GSC in scoring, eighth in rebounding and second in field goal percentage (.588).
Vining ranks among the GSC leaders in six statistical categories. She is 13th in scoring (14.2 points per game), tied for fifth in assists (3.8 per game), ninth in steals (2.1 per game), second in 3-point field goal percentage (.427), first in 3-point field goals made per game (2.9) and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4-to-1).
Weatherford is averaging 12.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game this season. She is among the GSC leaders in scoring (15th), field goal percentage (10th, .513) and free throw percentage (2nd, .846).
The nationally fourth-ranked Golden Suns (24-2), regular season champions of the GSC West Division, will begin their postseason run this weekend at the GSC Tournament in Southaven, Miss.
Arkansas Tech will face West Georgia (9-17) in the first round of the women’s tournament at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, at the DeSoto Civic Center.
