Smith Named ASMTA Teacher of the Year

Dr. Timothy Smith, associate professor of music at Arkansas Tech University, received the 2011 Arkansas State Music Teachers Association (ASMTA) teacher of the year award during the organization’s conference in Arkadelphia June 3-4.

Smith has served on the Arkansas Tech music faculty since 1998.

He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from St. Olaf College (1989), a Master of Music degree from Indiana University (1991) and a Doctor of Music degree in music literature and performance from Indiana University (1998).

Smith teaches courses in applied piano, music theory, piano accompanying, keyboard literature and piano pedagogy at Arkansas Tech. He is also a frequent accompanist for student and faculty recitals.

A past president of the ASMTA, Smith was nominated for the organization’s teacher of the year award by a pair of former students — Arkansas Tech graduates Davis Dorrough and Amanda Oldner.
