Tech Tennis Season Ends in GSC Tourney

North Alabama defeated Arkansas Tech 6-1 in the first round of the 2011 Gulf South Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament in Montgomery, Ala., on Saturday morning.

The Lions, who went on to finish as GSC Tournament runner-up, took 2-of-3 doubles matches from Arkansas Tech and they won all four singles matches that were completed. Two other singles matches were stopped early because the team result had been decided.

Tech’s lone win was recorded by Rachel Stevens and Maria Aleman. They defeated UNA’s Mackenzie Bishop and Madison Patey 8-6.

The Golden Suns, who won five consecutive matches to close out the regular season, saw their tennis season come to an end with an overall record of 10-7.

Michelle Yu of Flower Mound, Texas (photographed), was the lone senior for the Arkansas Tech tennis program in 2010-11.

Saturday marked Tech’s fourth consecutive appearance in the GSC Tennis Tournament and its last match in the event.

Head coach Abby Davis and the Golden Suns, along with the rest of the Arkansas Tech intercollegiate athletics program, will move forward to the new NCAA Division II Great American Conference in fall 2011.
