Arkansas Tech defeated traditional Gulf South Conference tennis power Delta State 5-4 in Cleveland, Miss., on Sunday.
It marked the first time during head coach Abby Davis’ seven-year tenure that the Golden Suns have defeated the Lady Statesmen in tennis.
Delta State is the three-time defending Gulf South Conference West Division champion. The Lady Statesmen qualified for the NCAA Division II Tennis Tournament last season.
The Golden Suns (2-1) won the match behind their domination in doubles. Arkansas Tech won all three doubles matches and then got wins in No. 1 singles from Mariel Alverez and No. 2 singles from Maria Aleman to clinch the team victory.
The win came at the end of a busy weekend for the Golden Suns. Tech opened its 2011 season by defeating Ouachita Baptist 7-2 in Arkadelphia on Friday. Nationally 19th-ranked Drury University edged past the Suns 5-4 on Saturday.

Arkansas Tech will continue its 2011 tennis season on Tuesday, Feb. 15, with a 5 p.m. match at Hendrix College in Conway.
