Tech Picked 4th in Baseball and Softball

Great American Conference coaches believe that Arkansas Tech University will finish in the top half of the baseball and softball league standings during the 2012 season.

The Wonder Boys are picked fourth among nine teams in the 2012 GAC baseball preseason poll, while the Golden Suns are picked fourth among eight teams in the 2012 GAC softball preseason poll.

Arkansas Tech was 35-19 overall in baseball during the 2011 campaign. The Wonder Boys advanced to the final day of the Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament for the first time in 10 years.

Tech also fared well in its final softball tour of the GSC. The Golden Suns were 34-19 overall and regular season champions of the GSC West Division.

Arkansas Tech is beginning a new era during the 2011-12 academic year as a charter member of the Great American Conference, which was certified as the 23rd NCAA Division II conference on March 9, 2011. Competition began during the fall 2011 semester.

The Wonder Boys will open their 2012 baseball season with a four-game series at Abilene Christian Feb. 3-5.

The Golden Suns’ 2012 softball season will begin with a 3 p.m. home doubleheader against the University of the Ozarks on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

The preseason favorite to win the inaugural GAC baseball championship is Southern Arkansas. The Muleriders earned seven of nine first-place votes.

Arkansas-Monticello and Southeastern Oklahoma State are co-favorites in the GAC preseason softball poll.
