Tech Issues Campus Safety Warning

Arkansas Tech University Department of Public Safety officers were notified on Friday, Dec. 3, of a sexual assault on the Russellville campus. The assault occurred at 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29. The assailant, described as a white male, was not known to the 21-year old female victim. The Arkansas Tech Department of Public Safety is investigating and has informed the Russellville Police Department and the Pope County Sheriff of the incident. “The safety of our students is our most important responsibility,” said Susie Nicholson, assistant to the president for university relations. “Our Office of Student Services took swift action on Friday to notify the campus community of this incident and remind students of resources that are available should they need them in an emergency situation.” A statement issued via e-mail to students, faculty and staff on Friday advised caution when walking on campus. The statement also encouraged individuals to stay in well-lit areas and when possible walk with a friend. The statement went on to remind students, faculty and staff that if they need an escort to an on-campus destination, they can call the Arkansas Tech Department of Public Safety at (479) 968-0222. “If you find yourself in a threatening situation on campus, please call 911 and an officer will be immediately dispatched to your location,” said Nicholson.
