Tech in 9th Place at College BASS Nationals

Day one of the 2011 College BASS National Championship in Little Rock saw the Arkansas Tech University duo of Evan Barnes and Dustin Huggins reel in four fish weighing a cumulative total of seven pounds, nine ounces.

Barnes (photographed, right) and Huggins (photographed, left) are in ninth place among a 26-team field following the first day of action on Thursday.

They must move into the top five during the second day of competition on Friday in order to make the cut and fish for a national championship on Saturday.

The 26 collegiate fishing teams will take to the waters of Lake Maumelle on Friday. Weigh-in is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at Murray Park in Little Rock.

Virginia Tech leads the College BASS National Championship standings after day one. The Hokies bagged the limit of five fish, and they weighed in at a healthy 15 pounds, nine ounces.

Texas A&M (2nd, 11 pounds, 10 ounces), Stephen F. Austin University (3rd, 11 pounds, two ounces), the University of Georgia (4th, 10 pounds, seven ounces) and North Carolina State (5th, 10 pounds, four ounces) round out the top five going into Friday.
