Tech Fishermen Finish 10th in Nation

Arkansas Tech students Dustin Huggins and Evan Barnes teamed up to finish 10th in the 2011 U.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship at Lake Lewisville, Texas, over the Memorial Day weekend.

Huggins (photographed, left) and Barnes (photographed, right) reeled in 17.31 pounds on Saturday to lead the tournament after day one, but their fortunes changed on day two.

They caught 1.64 pounds on Sunday to fall to 10th place in the final standings, while the University of Central Florida team of Miles Burghoff and Casey O’Donnell weighed in with 10.85 pounds on day two to rally for the tournament championship with a total haul of 27.92 pounds.

A total of 244 two-person teams from colleges and universities across the country entered the event. The contestants pulled more than 1,140 pounds of fish from the waters of Lake Lewisville during the two-day tournament.

Two other two-man teams from Arkansas Tech also competed in the 2011 U.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship. Lucas Madison and Evan Smith weighed in with 15.44 pounds to finish 23rd, while Kyle Brookshear and Matt Gray brought in 7.36 pounds and finished 65th.
