Tech Earns Votes in AFCA Preseason Poll

Arkansas Tech is among the teams receiving votes in the 2010 American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division II preseason top 25 poll.

The Wonder Boys received four points in the preseason poll, which was released by the AFCA on Monday.

A total of seven Gulf South Conference teams drew attention in the AFCA preseason poll.

North Alabama (3rd), West Alabama (12th) and Delta State (24th) all earned a spot in the preseason top 25. Valdosta State, Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist joined Arkansas Tech in the others receiving votes category.

Arkansas Tech is ranked among the top 25 in the nation by two preseason NCAA Division II rankings. The Wonder Boys are ranked No. 21 by Lindy’s, while Sporting News has tabbed Arkansas Tech as the No. 23 team in the nation.

Tech is coming off a 2009 season that saw the Wonder Boys finish 9-3 overall and 6-2 in Gulf South Conference play. Arkansas Tech was the GSC runner-up and the Wonder Boys reached the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

Head coach Steve Mullins will welcome 10 returning starters — four on offense and six on defense — and a total of 45 returning lettermen when the Wonder Boys begin preseason practice on Wednesday, Aug. 11.

Mullins is entering his 14th season as Arkansas Tech’s head football coach. He is the Wonder Boys’ all-time leader in career wins as head football coach (85) and he is a three-time GSC coach of the year (1999, 2004 and 2009).

Arkansas Tech will open its 2010 campaign with a 7 p.m. non-conference game against Lambuth University (Tenn.) at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field on Thursday, Sept. 2.
