Tech Debate Places at Tournament

Members of the Arkansas Tech debate and forensics team competed in their fourth tournament of the academic year at the Southern Forensics Championship tournament earlier this semester in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The tournament serves as a state championship tournament for Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana.

During the competition, Tech student Sierra Abram took fifth place in communications analysis and was declared the Arkansas state champion in the event. Abram also placed sixth in information speaking and was named the state champion in that category.

Six Arkansas Tech students competed in four divisions of the debate:

  • Individual Varsity Debate –  Rebecca Lawson and Sierra Abram
  • Individual Junior Varsity Debate – Michael O’Brien and Jonathan Williams
  • Individual Novice Debate – George Wewer III and Daniel Aleman
  • Team Debate – Rebecca Lawson, George Wewer III, Michael O’Brien and Jonathan Williams

Debate Team member, George Wewer III was elected to serve a term as the Arkansas student representative on the Southern Forensics Championship board.

Three Arkansas Tech students also took part in the event by serving as judges.

The Arkansas Tech debate team will continue their season by hosting “Team Me Up/Technically Speaking” debate tournament later this month.
