Tech Bands Present Collage Concert Sunday

The Arkansas Tech University bands will present their annual Collage Concert on Sunday, May 2, in the Witherspoon Building Auditorium.

The free concert is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., and both bands will be under the direction of Hal Cooper, director of bands.

The concert will begin with the Symphonic Band trumpet section being featured on Leroy Anderson’s classic Buglers’ Holiday.

Next, the Concert Band will take the stage to perform the The Beau Ideal, a march by John Phillips Sousa. The Concert Band will also perform James Barnes’ Variants on a Moravian Hymn, which will feature the trombone section.

The Symphonic Band will begin its portion of the concert with Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, which will feature soprano soloist Keely Futterer of Dover.

Tubist Matt Gray of North Little Rock will be the featured performer during the concert.  He won the annual student concerto competition and will perform his winning entry with the band.

Next, the Symphonic Band percussion ensemble will perform the African Welcome Piece, and the band will conclude the concert with March Militaire Francaise by Saint Saens.

“This is our most popular band program throughout the year,” adds Cooper.  “I heard about this type of concert at a College Band Directors’ convention clinic on programming several years ago, and we have been organizing and performing one ever since.”
