Tech Assistant Named Head Coach at HSU

Henderson State University announced on Tuesday, March 29, that it has hired Arkansas Tech assistant men’s basketball coach Doug Nichols as its new head men’s basketball coach.

Nichols (photographed) served as the top assistant coach under head coach Doug Karleskint at Arkansas Tech during the 2010-11 season.

“I couldn’t be more pleased for Doug,” said Karleskint in a statement released by the Arkansas Tech Athletics Department on Tuesday afternoon. “This is a great opportunity for him and one he is certainly deserving of. Doug was a big part of the successful season our team just had.”

Nichols helped the Wonder Boys post an overall record of 25-6, win the Gulf South Conference West Division title, advance to the GSC Tournament championship game and reach the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Nichols becomes the 27th head coach in the 99-year history of Henderson State men’s basketball.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me,” said Nichols in a news release from Henderson State. “Every coach dreams of becoming a head coach one day, and I could not be more excited about the opportunity that the committee has afforded me.”

Nichols previously served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I member Stephen F. Austin University during the 2009-10 season.
