Tech Adopts Policy for Selecting Alumni Board

The Arkansas Tech University Board of Trustees approved a new organizational document for the Arkansas Tech University Alumni Association Board of Directors during its meeting on Thursday.

The document streamlines the process by which members of the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors are selected. The document goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2011. Nominations for the alumni board may be made by any alumnus or alumna of Arkansas Tech University. The Arkansas Tech Office of Alumni Services will receive and process the nominations for review. Deadline for nominations will be Sept. 1 of each year.

Those nominations will be forwarded to a five-person selection committee, which will in turn present no more than eight names for consideration to the vice president for development at Arkansas Tech. The vice president for development will review the recommendations and forward them to the university president, who will make recommendations to the Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees. At that point, it will be the responsibility of the Tech Board of Trustees to appoint eight members to the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors each year. “This organizational document was drafted using the same tenets as the Hall of Distinction process that the Board of Trustees adopted in 2006,” wrote Jayne Jones, vice president for development, in a memorandum. “There is no question that the prestige of the highest award we bestow on our alumni and friends was elevated even further as a result of that process. “As we enter our second century,” continued Jones, “the time is right to define the expectations and responsibilities of alumni board members and provide a systematic, objective method for Board of Director appointments while retaining the open process by which any Tech alumnus may submit an individual for nomination.” As it does now, the alumni board will consist of 25 non-compensated members. Twenty-four of those members will represent the Russellville campus, while one representative will be an alumnus or alumna of Arkansas Tech-Ozark Campus. The alumni board will continue to be comprised of members representing various class years, majors, professions and geographic areas. Alumni board members will be selected based on demonstrated involvement, support and commitment to the Tech Alumni Association and or Arkansas Tech University. Appointed alumni board members will serve three-year terms, and they may serve two consecutive terms. The Arkansas Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors will have two officers: a president and a president-elect. Current alumni board members will make nominations for and select a president-elect each year. Major responsibilities for alumni board members will include supporting the mission of the Tech Alumni Association and the university, aiding in the cultivation of private donations to the university and attending between three and four meetings per year.
