Tech Adds Alumni Chapter for Ft. Smith Region

The Arkansas Tech University Alumni Association has expanded its outreach in the Fort Smith region with the creation of the Arkansas Tech River Valley Alumni Chapter.

A group of 11 founding members gathered to officially set the chapter in motion on Thursday, Aug. 9.

Bob Moody of Fort Smith will serve as the first president of the Arkansas Tech River Valley Alumni Chapter. Other officers include vice president Tracey Geren of Fort Smith, secretary Amanda Daniels of Fort Smith and treasurer Norma Meares of Fort Smith.

Seven other founding members — Donna Beneux of Mulberry, Keith Clutts of Fort Smith, Steve Kesner of Fort Smith, Dr. Jo Harper of Fort Smith, Bruce Birkhead of Fort Smith, Barry Kincannon of Fort Smith and Buddy Acoach of Charleston — were on hand to help establish the chapter.

After a one-hour meeting, the group is already making plans for its first gathering as a group during Homecoming weekend Oct. 5-6.

The River Valley Chapter is Tech’s second alumni chapter. The Dallas/Ft. Worth Chapter, which currently has more than 50 members, was established in 2011.

According to its Web site, the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association initiated its chapter program for the following reasons:

  • To bring alumni in a geographical area together in an organized effort;
  • To encourage participation of alumni and friends more fully in the spirit of Arkansas Tech;
  • To foster a climate of pride and support for current and future students, the university, and the Alumni Association;
  • To play a role in accomplishing objectives that are vital to the future of Arkansas Tech University and the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association.
