Symphonic Wind Ensemble to Perform Sunday

The Arkansas Tech University Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform an award-winning piece by noted modern composer John Mackey during a concert at Witherspoon Auditorium on Sunday, Feb. 12.  The performance will begin at 3 p.m. Admission will be free and open to the public. “Aurora Awakes,” which was composed in 2009, earned Mackey (photographed) his second American Bandmasters Association Ostwald Award for composition. The piece also received first-place honors in the 2009 National Band Association William D. Revelli Composition Contest. In addition to “Aurora Awakes,” the Arkansas Tech Symphonic Wind Ensemble will also perform “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Lauridsen, “Overture for Winds Op. 24” by Felix Mendelssohn and “Symphony 2” by Frank Ticheli on Sunday. The performance will mark the first of the spring 2012 semester for the Arkansas Tech Symphonic Wind Ensemble, which was previously known as the Arkansas Tech Symphonic Band.
