“Symphonic Jazz” Concert Planned for Sunday

The Arkansas Tech University Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the ATU Symphonic Band will offer a concert entitled “Symphonic Jazz” at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2.

Admission to Witherspoon Auditorium, 407 West Q Street in Russellville, will be free and open to the public.

The ATU Symphonic Wind Ensemble’s portion of the program will be a suite from the opera “Porgy and Bess” by George and Ira Gershwin as arranged by Donald Hunsberger. The suite, which is entitled “Catfish Row,” will feature a pre-performance talk by Dr. Phoebe Robertson, ATU assistant professor of music, and guest vocalists Cherisse Williams (soprano) and Dr. Christopher Harris (baritone).

Dr. Daniel A. Belongia, ATU professor of music and director of bands, conducts the ATU Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

The ATU Symphonic Band will perform “St. Louis Blues” by W.C. Handy, “Shenandoah” as arranged by Omar Thomas, “Second Prelude” by George Gershwin and “Bridges” by Katahj Copley under the baton of Dr. Jon Nash, ATU assistant professor of music and associate director of bands.
