Suns Win Inaugural GAC Tennis Tournament

Arkansas Tech University was undefeated in Great American Conference women’s tennis matches during the 2012 regular season.

So it’s appropriate that the Golden Suns went on a spotless run through the inaugural GAC Women’s Tennis Tournament to add the postseason trophy to their collection.

Arkansas Tech swept East Central University 5-0 in the championship match at the Ouachita Baptist University courts in Arkadelphia on Saturday afternoon to win the GAC postseason championship.

It was the Golden Suns’ second sweep of the day. They defeated Southeastern Oklahoma State 5-0 in a semifinal match earlier in the day.

As was the case throughout their season-ending 12-match winning streak, doubles play was a key to Arkansas Tech’s success.

The Golden Suns started both the semifinal and final matches by going 3-0 in doubles. They won 35 of their final 36 doubles matches this season.

With the win, Arkansas Tech tied its school record for women’s tennis victories in a season. The Golden Suns finished with 2012 campaign with a 17-5 overall record.

Arkansas Tech had only won one women’s tennis conference title in school history before this season. The Golden Suns were champions of Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference women’s tennis in 1995.

Now head coach Abby Davis and the Tech tennis program have two GAC championship trophies — one for the 2012 regular season and one for the 2012 GAC Tournament.

Below are complete results from the championship match:
