Nationally top-ranked Arkansas Tech forced 32 turnovers and shot 50 percent from the field in an 80-67 season-opening victory over the St. Gregory’s Cavaliers in non-conference women’s basketball at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Sunday afternoon.
Jenny Vining had 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field and Natalia Santos scored 24 points for the Golden Suns, who won their season opener for a third consecutive year.
Jessica Weatherford (photographed) added 12 points for Arkansas Tech, while Laura Beth Anderson made eight assists and Shaquilah Davis collected four steals.
The Golden Suns (1-0) used an early 9-0 run to take an 11-2 lead. Tech never trailed, but St. Gregory’s stayed within reach all afternoon behind the shooting of Leticia Silva.
Silva made her first seven 3-point attempts and finished with 21 points. D’Seanda Trotter and Jalisa Howard added 16 points apiece for the Cavaliers.
The Golden Suns will host Rhema Bible for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference contest at Tucker Coliseum on Tuesday, Nov. 16.
Members of the general public can gain admission to the game for $1 if they donate one or more non-perishable food items. Those items will be distributed to local food pantries.
Admission will be free for those with a valid Tech identification card.
