Suns Topple Another Highly-Ranked Foe

Arkansas Tech collected its fifth win this season over a team ranked in the top 10 of NCAA Division II softball by defeating the nationally fourth-ranked Valdosta State Lady Blazers 7-6 in the Gulf South Conference Softball Crossover in Decatur, Ala., on Saturday.

Shelby Jo Fenter delivered the go-ahead, two-run single for the Golden Suns (24-12 overall, 15-2 GSC) with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Natalie Magie and Molly Edwards scored on the play to put Tech in front 7-6.

Fenter’s fellow Arkansas Tech freshman — Amy Horne (2-0) — made the lead stand up. She pitched four shutout innings in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out four along the way.

Earlier on Saturday, the Golden Suns saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-0 loss to nationally top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville.

The Chargers led just 1-0 after six innings, but they scored four times in the top of the seventh to pull away.

The Golden Suns will close out their portion of the GSC Softball Crossover by facing Lambuth University at 10 a.m. and West Alabama at noon on Sunday, April 10.
