Suns One Win Away from Earning Title

Arkansas Tech University softball will have an opportunity on Sunday to claim a distinction it has never previously held: conference tournament champion.

The Golden Suns (42-17) will face Southern Nazarene University (27-27-1) in the Great American Conference Tournament championship round at noon at the Tiger Athletic Complex in Bentonville.

Live coverage will be available on KCAB 97.1 FM/980 AM and www.arkansastechsports.com.

Arkansas Tech improved to 3-0 at the 2018 GAC Tournament by defeating Southern Nazarene 6-0 on Saturday.

Janie Knowles went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in for the Suns. Bailey Bunch added two RBIs, while Makenzie Addis was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one driven in. Ashton Sangster also notched an RBI.

Tech’s Megan Goodnight (16-4) pitched a five-hit shutout. She recorded two strikeouts and did not allow an extra base hit.

Southern Nazarene recovered from the setback to come through the losers’ bracket and advance to championship Sunday.

The Crimson Storm eliminated nationally seventh-ranked Southern Arkansas University from the GAC Tournament by defeating the GAC regular season champions 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Southern Nazarene would be required to defeat Arkansas Tech twice on Sunday to win the GAC Tournament championship. If the Crimson Storm wins the noon game, a second and deciding game would begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.

Both programs are making their first appearance in the GAC Tournament championship round.

The Golden Suns made two championship game appearances (2008 and 2009) during their Gulf South Conference era.
