Suns, Lady Bucs Battle for First Place

First place in the Gulf South Conference West Division volleyball standings will be on the line when the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns host the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 5).

First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tucker Coliseum. No admission will be charged. The match has been designated as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.

Arkansas Tech (18-3 overall, 3-0 GSC) is on a 13-match winning streak. The Golden Suns have not lost since dropping a 3-2 decision to Barry University on Sept. 11.

Christian Brothers (9-10, 3-1) went to Magnolia on Sunday and defeated Southern Arkansas 3-2 to pull within one-half match of Arkansas Tech for the GSC West lead.

The Golden Suns lead the GSC West in hitting percentage (.262) and they lead the entire conference in opponent’s hitting percentage (.115).

Tech’s Kelly O’Malley (3rd, .338), Sarah Von Lienen (4th, .329) and Ashlynn Hamrick (5th, .328) all rank among the GSC leaders in individual hitting percentage.

Von Lienen (3.61 kills per game) and Laura Farney (3.28 kills per game) rank fourth and fifth respectively in the GSC in kills.

Arkansas Tech setter Kera Dukic ranks second in the GSC and 18th in all of NCAA Division II in assists (10.91 per game).

The Lady Buccaneers’ greatest strength is at the net. CBU ranks third in the GSC in blocks (124).
