Suns, HSU Split Softball Doubleheader

Arkansas Tech avoided a series sweep by defeating the Henderson State Lady Reddies 5-1 on Sunday in the finale of the four-game Great American Conference softball series at Dee White Field in Arkadelphia.

Victoria Huie (photographed) pitched a complete game and went 4-for-4 at the plate with one run scored and one run driven in as the Golden Suns (8-8 overall, 4-4 GAC) picked up their first victory away from home this season.

Huie (3-3) limited the Lady Reddies to one run on five hits in seven innings. She walked two and struck out one.

Tech’s Hayley Hudson went 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Golden Suns took advantage of three Henderson State errors, two of which came during a three-run Tech rally in the fourth inning.

The Lady Reddies (11-10, 4-4), who swept a doubleheader from the Golden Suns on Saturday, won Sunday’s first game 3-1.

HSU’s Melissa Decker (6-3) was the winning pitcher. She surrendered one run on five hits in seven innings.

Amy Halter and Brittnie Dean had two hits apiece for the Lady Reddies.

Arkansas Tech will host Ouachita Baptist for a four-game GAC softball series at Tech Field in Russellville next weekend. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, and noon on Sunday, March 11.
