Suns, Hornets Meet in NCAA 1st Round

The Golden Suns have won four of their last five games. They rank among the NCAA Division II national leaders in field goal percentage (12th, .456) and rebound margin (16th, +7.6 per game) this season. Junior forward Fatima Adams was named GAC newcomer of the year and All-GAC first team. She will be the first Arkansas Tech women’s basketball player since Jennifer Richardson in 1997-98 to average more than 20 points per game for an entire season. Adams ranks sixth in the country in scoring (21.5 points per game). The Golden Suns are 19-11 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. They won regional championships in 1998, 1999, 2010 and 2011. Arkansas Tech was women’s NCAA Division II national runner-up in 1999. About the Hornets: Emporia State is ranked No. 10 in the USA Today Sports Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II top 25 poll. The Hornets have won the last three Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament championships, including the 2015 title with a 49-46 win over Fort Hays State on Sunday. Emporia State is making its 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 19 years. The Hornets were known for their explosive offense when they joined Arkansas Tech in the NCAA Elite Eight in 1998 and 1999, but this year’s Emporia State team does its best work on the other end of the floor.
