Suns Corral Mustangs in Exhibition Game

Arkansas Tech senior forward Jessica Weatherford scored a game-high 22 points and the Golden Suns shot 70 percent from the field in the first half during a 99-52 victory over the Central Baptist College Lady Mustangs in an exhibition women’s basketball game at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Saturday.

The Suns used a 39-0 run over a span of 8:22 late in the first half to open up a 60-14 lead. Tech went to halftime with a 64-19 edge and led by as many as 56 points in the second half.

Weatherford was 11-of-18 from the field in 21 minutes of playing time. She also gathered nine rebounds.

Tikeyiah Johnson, a junior transfer from John Logan Community College, scored 14 points for the Golden Suns on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Cara Neighbors, a Lonoke product who redshirted at Arkansas Tech last season, added 10 points for the Suns.

Tech’s Westin Taylor and Caitlyn Spurgeon both had eight points. Taylor is a senior transfer from the University of Central Arkansas, while Spurgeon is a freshman at Arkansas Tech after earning Oklahoma Coaches Association state high school player of the year honors at Vinita High School last season.

The Golden Suns will play their first regular season game at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, when they host Christian Brothers University for a non-conference game at Tucker Coliseum.

Fans that donate a new and unwrapped toy at the door will be admitted for $1 per person. All toys collected at the game will go to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign.
