Suns Clinch No. 2 Seed in GAC Tournament

Arkansas Tech completed a regular season sweep of Southern Arkansas and earned the No. 2 seed in the 2012 Great American Conference Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over the Lady Muleriders at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Thursday night.

The Golden Suns (25-9 overall, 11-3 GAC) won 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 behind a standout effort from Brittany Ryan.

One of three Arkansas Tech seniors making their final home appearance, Ryan notched 12 kills against just one attack error in 20 attempts for a .550 hitting percentage. She also made two blocks.

Kaitlyn White made 11 kills and nine digs, Amber Cerrillos had 35 assists and nine digs and Morgan McKellar notched 16 digs for the Golden Suns.

Denise DeVine had 16 kills and 14 digs in a losing effort for the Lady Muleriders (22-10, 11-3).

It was the final home match for Ryan and fellow seniors Lindsey Layes and Carly Florian. Layes made four digs against SAU, while Florian sat out due to an injury she suffered against Harding on Oct. 30.

The Golden Suns will conclude their 2012 volleyball season by participating in the GAC Tournament beginning on Thursday, Nov. 15, at Rhodes Field House in Searcy.

No. 2 seed Arkansas Tech will face No. 7 seed Arkansas-Monticello in the tournament’s opening round. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 16, while the championship match will be played on Saturday, Nov. 17.

The Golden Suns are defending GAC Volleyball Tournament champions. Harding University (25-6, 14-0) captured the 2012 GAC regular season volleyball title and will host the GAC Tournament.
