Students Learn From Industry Leaders

Arkansas Tech University students are learning from industry professionals as part of their time in the classroom.

Ormand Peters, director of Shinn Funeral Service in Russellville, recently spoke with students in Dr. Jason Ulsperger’s Psychosocial Aspects of Death and Dying Class.

According to the course description, the psychology course provides students with a basic insight into the dynamics surrounding death from the individual and societal level, its impact on survivors and the effect death has on the living.

During his visit, Peters discussed training needed for employment in the funeral industry, the dynamics of orchestrating a funeral service and regional variation in funeral practices. He also provided details on grief management and state laws regulating the funeral industry.

Ulsperger says industry professionals play an important role in educating students.  He added, “It is an honor to have someone with Mr. Peters’ experience speak to students and provide them with a realistic, first-hand interpretation of funeral home employment.”
