Spring Sports Open Play This Week

It’s difficult to believe based on the weather, but the spring sports season at Arkansas Tech University has arrived.

The Wonder Boys baseball team is scheduled to open its 2011 season by hosting Hendrix College for a single 9-inning game on Tuesday, Feb. 8. First pitch at Tech Field is set for 1 p.m.

Arkansas Tech returns six starters in the field and five pitchers from a team that established a new school record for baseball wins in a season in 2010.

The Wonder Boys were 35-19 overall last season. They finished second in the Gulf South Conference West Division with a 14-6 league record, which allowed them to qualify for the GSC Tournament for the first time since 2007.

Once in the tournament, Arkansas Tech secured its first postseason baseball win since 2001 by defeating Henderson State 12-7.

The Wonder Boys are picked by league head coach to finish third in the GSC West Division this season.

Softball season at Arkansas Tech will begin on Friday, Feb. 11, with a non-conference twin bill.

The Golden Suns will welcome William Woods University (Mo.) to the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Arkansas Tech was 22-26 overall and 12-18 in GSC West Division softball play last season. The Golden Suns, who won GSC West titles in 2008 and 2009, return six starting position players and two pitchers from last year’s squad.

According to a preseason poll of league head coaches, Tech is picked to finish fifth in the GSC West Division softball race in 2011.

Also on Friday, Feb. 11, the Golden Suns tennis team will begin its 2011 campaign.

Arkansas Tech and Ouachita Baptist are scheduled for a 5 p.m. match in Arkadelphia.

The Golden Suns qualified for the GSC Tennis Tournament for a third consecutive season in 2010. Tech has accumulated 38 tennis victories over the past three seasons.

The coming weeks will also bring the spring 2011 debuts of the Wonder Boys golf team (Feb. 21-22 at the Doyle Wallace Classic in Hot Springs) and the Golden Suns golf team (March 14-15 at the Texas A&M-Commerce Lion Invitational in Pottsboro, Texas).
