SOSU Savage Storm Rolls Into Tech Thursday

Arkansas Tech University will resume the Great American Conference portion of its 2016-17 basketball schedules by hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State University for a doubleheader at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Thursday, Jan. 5.

It will be the first of three consecutive home GAC doubleheaders for the Golden Suns and the Wonder Boys. Tech will welcome East Central University to Tucker Coliseum for games at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, before tangling with Ouachita Baptist University at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12.

Tickets ($5 adults/$3 students and senior citizens) will be available at the door. Those with a valid Arkansas Tech identification card will be admitted free of charge.

About the Golden Suns: Arkansas Tech has been idle since securing a 77-74 non-conference win over Drury University on Dec. 7. It was the sixth consecutive win for the Golden Suns, who are 41-5 at home since the beginning of the 2013-14 season. Junior forward Cheyenne North (14.8 points per game), senior guard Kelsey McClure (13.8 points per game), senior guard Anissa Pounds (11.4 points per game) and senior forward Danielle Frachiseur (10.5 points per game) are Tech’s leading scorers.

About the Savage Storm: Southeastern Oklahoma State already owns two road wins in GAC play this season. The Savage Storm won at the University of Arkansas-Monticello 72-69 and at Southern Arkansas University 77-61 during a road trip in November. Senior guard Olivia Potter leads the Savage Storm and ranks third in the GAC in scoring (14.9 points per game). Southeastern ranks second in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.277).

About the Wonder Boys: Sophomore guard Alex Brown has averaged 30.3 points per game over Arkansas Tech’s last three outings. He has made 39-of-59 field goal attempts (66 percent) and 12-of-24 (50 percent) 3-point tries over that span. The Wonder Boys lead the GAC in 3-point field goals made (12.4 per game), and they rank second in the conference in scoring offense (88.0 points per game). Arkansas Tech is 5-0 at home this season.

About the Savage Storm: Southeastern Oklahoma State has not played a game since Dec. 10, when it dropped an 88-69 decision at NCAA Division I member Texas-San Antonio. It was Southeastern’s third consecutive loss. The Savage Storm leads the GAC in scoring defense (68.3 points allowed per game) and offensive rebounds (13.6 per game). Southeastern is 1-4 on the road in 2016-17.
