Snell Helping Others During Internship

Arkansas Tech University student Kenneth Snell is spending his summer helping others improve their well-being.

Snell, a senior majoring in wellness/fitness, is interning this summer at Back to Basics Fitness Center.

While there, Snell is assisting in all aspects of the fitness center operation including facility upkeep, marketing and assisting clients.

Snell says his favorite part is getting to work with clients and help them make a positive change in their life.

“You have to be careful to find a balance when dealing with a person’s health and reality,” said Snell. “You don’t want to put doubt in someone that is trying to achieve unrealistic goals.  You want to encourage them with their time and efforts.”

One challenge for Snell is learning about the behind-the-scenes side of owning a fitness center.

“I hope to gain experience that will lead me to employment at a local fitness center and be able to someday open my own business,” added Snell. “The marketing and business aspect is the real challenge.  This is a field where you have to balance many things to run a successful business.”

During his internship, Snell says he feels prepared because of several experiences at Tech.

“Learning nutrition, anatomy and exercise physiology has prepared me with the knowledge so that I can fulfill my duties at the fitness center,” said Snell.  “Additionally, I’ve trained as an athlete my whole college career, which includes playing football at Arkansas Tech. Those experiences have helped me gain the skill set and motivation, and now I’m able to apply it to help others.”

Snell will graduate from Arkansas Tech this August.
