Smith, Mullenix to Compete for National Title

Arkansas Tech University Fishing Club members Evan Smith and Jordan Mullenix will be among more than 100 collegiate anglers vying for the 2012 Carhartt College Series National Championship beginning on Wednesday, July 25.

Teams from fifty-five colleges and universities will fish the waters of the Arkansas River on Wednesday, July 25, and Lake Maumelle on Thursday, July 26.

The top five teams after Thursday will make the cut and fish a mystery lake on Friday, July 27, in search of the national title.

Boats will launch just after 6 a.m. all three days, with weigh-in scheduled for 3:30 p.m. each day at the Tractor Supply Company location at 10801 Colonel Glenn Road in Little Rock.

The team of Smith (photographed, right) and Mullenix (photographed, left) has been a winning combination before.

They captured the 2012 University of Louisiana at Monroe Invitational title April 14-15 with a two-day haul of 22.8 pounds.

In addition to competing for the national championship, anglers in the 2012 Carhartt College Series National Championship will have a chance to earn a berth in one of the most prestigious professional bass fishing tournaments in the world — the 2013 Bassmaster Classic.

Members of the top four teams after the competition is over on Friday will return to the waters on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29. The winner of that two-day individual tournament will be on his way to the Bassmaster Classic.

“We’ve joked about what will happen once we get to that point,” said Mullenix in an interview with www.bassmaster.com. “We know each other’s secrets. Having to compete against each other will be much harder than having to beat any other team.”
